Official opening O&M building in IJmuiden

Wednesday 21 September saw the official opening of the Operations & Maintenance building in IJmuiden. For the next 35 years the operations and maintenance activities of Vattenfall at the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm will take place from this building.

The building, designed and realized by Wouter Jonker of Vattenfall in collaboration with architect Marc van de Velde, is built CO2-neutral and largely circular. In this way Vattenfall – in addition to generating sustainable energy – also keeps the footprint in operations and maintenance as small as possible. The building will house approximately 60 people. These 60 people operate the wind turbines after delivery to be able to run at full capacity for as much of the time as possible to produce green energy.

During the opening, Robin van Buchem, Director of Operations & Maintenance, expressed his appreciation for the constructive cooperation Vattenfall experienced when settling in the Port of IJmuiden. As an opening act, Peter van den Meerakker, director of the Port of IJmuiden, fished the key to the building from the North Sea and handed it over to Vattenfall. In doing so, he indicated that the key to success lies in allowing the generation of sustainable energy to go together with the protection of the ecosystem of the North Sea, an ambition that Vattenfall attaches great importance to. Director Renewable Energy of HKZ co-owner BASF, Tobias Staeb, emphasized the commitment and positive drive from BASF and third co-owner Allianz to work with Vattenfall for the successful operation of the wind farm, in combination with a healthy ecology in the North Sea. With neighbours, partners and contract parties, a toast was then made to a prosperous future for the wind farm and the collaboration.

The aim is to have all the turbines of the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm installed by mid-2023. Construction activities will continue in the coming months. The Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm will steadily supply more sustainable energy to the grid. The Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm is being built by Vattenfall and is owned by Vattenfall, BASF and Allianz.
